Sweep Rowing Shafts

M2 Superlight or M4 Full Carbon Designed for men's and women's crews at an elite level. Also suitable for competitive collegiate and scholastic men. There is some selective use by very strong Div. 1 women's collegiate crews, but only with cutaway blades.
Weight: M2 - 2650 grams; M4 - 2550 grams
Blade Options: Slick, Slick Cutaway
Handle Options: Carbon/blue foam adjustable, Carbon/veneer adjustable

M2 Soft Superlight or M4 Soft Full Carbon Designed for crews in eights, fours, and pairs, particularly women and veterans, and other crews at all levels below elite. M2 Soft offers a little more flex in the shaft. These are most commonly built with cutaway blades.
Weight: M2 Soft - 2600 grams; M4 Soft - 2500 grams
Blade Options: Slick, Slick Cutaway
Handle Options: Carbon/blue foam adjustable, Carbon/veneer adjustable

• All M4 shafts are special order
• It is suggested that you not order "up" to a stiffer shaft and "learn to row it". Purchase the shaft that will allow you to go fast--without injury--now.
• It is suggested for all womens' crews, and some lightweight mens' crews, to use a cutaway blade.

Slick Rowing Blade

Slick OarThe Slick Rowing Blade is normally assembled with a 70mm hook. The gentle asymmetric curvature of the blade assures a clean release from the water with every stroke. Slick Blades are visibly cleaner than other blades. This provides enough load for the strongest crews but the asymmetric curvature of the blade makes it extremely clean in and out of the water. The Slick Blade is now available with closed edges, which improves the blades durability and overall performance. The Slick Rowing Blade is available on all shafts.

The Slick Blade has no ridgeline so there is less splash at the catch. The low volume blade enters the water quickly and quietly and floats low in the water. The longitudinal curvature is perpendicular to the tip and so is in line with the flow of water. It has a constant pitch across the tip and all lines parallel to the tip.

Our standard full slick blade is one of the largest traditional hatchet/cleaver style blades available.

The Slick Blade does not exhibit any negative tendencies during recovery or in bad weather.

The blade can be reduced in size--"cutaway"-- for women and schoolgirls, or those who have a history of back/rib injuries.Slick Oar

Because of the arc path followed by the blade during the stroke, this cutaway section is most effective when the blade moves through the 'sweet spot' and water hits the face of the blade most directly. With less surface area, the cutaway blade encounters less resistance because some water flow is not 'stopped' by the missing piece. One would row a cutaway slick at longer shaft length than one would a full slick. For crews who might find the full slick was too much load at their preferred length, the only option (besides cutting it down) is to shorten the overall adjustable length of the oar.

For some, this can be uncomfortably (and ineffectively) short as they seek to find a manageable load rigging, and not appropriate to some specific rowing styles. The cutaway allows these rowers to use the more familiar and traditional lengths by reducing the load at the bladeface, allowing them to extend the oar back out to where they like it. Slick cutaway blades are regularly rowed to world championship medals, the same as full slick blades, on both Superlight and Soft Superlight shafts.

Sweep HandlesSweep Rowing Handles

Croker sweep rowing oars come with adjustable carbon handles, with either a blue foam or timber veneer surface. We have designed our rowing handles with comfort and ease of use as our highest priority. Selecting a handle that is correct for you is necessary to achieve the best performance. A handle that is too small will cause trouble in the rough water and may turn in the rower’s hand uncontrollably. A handle that is too big will fatigue the rower’s forearms and also result in excessive wrist movement feathering the oar.

Adjustable Carbon Handles
Available in three sizes, and fitted with either a blue foam rubber grip or a timber veneer grip.

42mm-39mm: "Small" tapered; Black end cap adjustable only; synthetic or veneer;
42mm-42mm: "Medium" not tapered; Yellow end cap adjustable only; synthetic or veneer;
45mm-42mm: "Large"tapered; White end cap adjustable only; synthetic or veneer;

sleeve in lockRowing Sleeves

All new rowing oars come with the Mark 3 asymmetric sleeve, unless the customer explicitly special orders the traditional symmetric versions. Availability of the traditional symmetric may be limited, as they are only ordered and produced as needed. Croker reserves the right to discontinue production and sales of older versions at any time.

Our asymmetric collar improves oar handling and the design reflects a modern focus on the two flat sides that determine square or feather position. Areas not involved in the square or feather alignment are rounded, to better facilitate rotation in the oarlock. A small flat space at the front of the sleeve allows for more effective square-blade drills. The sleeve is held together by eight interlocking clips, integral to the design.

NOTE: We DO NOT recommend using Magik oarlocks as they tend to wear out both Croker sleeves and collars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which shaft do you recommend?
A: That depends. Review this general reference chart, compiled from elite user feedback, and feel free to contact us with any questions.

Q: Which blade shape do you recommend?
A: It is recommended for womens' crews, up through the elite level, to use a cutaway blade. Lightweight mens crews might use a cutaway blade with a standard length shaft, especially when using a stiff shaft.

Q: How should I clean and maintain sweep handle surfaces?

A: For both the blue foam and wood veneer handle surfaces, we recommend frequent cleaning--twice per month--with a diluted solution of trisodium phosphate (TSP), available at any hardware store, and water. Use a ratio of 1 cup of TSP to 1 gallon of water. Wear nitrile gloves and lightly scrub the solution into the handle surface with a wire brush, gently removing the accumulated grime that has compacted into the pores of the wood or foam. You should find restoration of surface tone to be quite noticeable. If portions of your blue foam are still a little flat, softly rake the areas with the edge of a hacksaw blade until the foam fluffs up. For the wood surface, twisting the handle inside a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper on occasion will provide similar benefits.

DO NOT groove your wood handles with a saw, as was once popular in the days of solid wood handles. The wood veneer is only 1/16-inch thick.
